CROPCELL (Pty) Ltd
The need for a research development company, capable of handling diverse research projects within agriculture, was identified. This led to the establishment of Cropcell.
The first project to be handled by Cropcell will be the development of PCR technology for the South African potato industry. This advanced technology is already applied commercially in Europe for the testing of, inter alia, seed potatoes presented for certification purposes. Various benefits will be derived from the application of this technology, including quicker and much more accurate test results.
The first step will be the validation process in respect of the technology within the context of the local potato industry. The validation process and later commercial application of the PCR testing method will be undertaken at Plantovita, situated at Zeekoegat north of Pretoria, in which laboratory complex the DPO has a shareholding.
The final shareholding in Cropcell still needs to be determined. The principle has been accepted that shareholding in this company will, in the interests of agriculture, be restricted to organisations/companies rendering a service to South African agriculture. Partners who have been identified are the DPO and Potatoes South Africa (both commodity organisations) and Potato Certification Service.
